Harrow & Bell — Joinery, Somerset
How a commission actually works, start to finish.
A rail that fills to wherever you are reading, and steps that come alive as they reach the middle of the screen. It is the most-built section in this whole lab and it is twenty lines.
Six steps, roughly four months.
01 / 06
We take eleven commissions a year. If the timeline does not suit you we will say so on the first call rather than the fourth.
You send us a photograph of the room
Not a brief, not a moodboard — a phone photo and a rough measurement. Ninety percent of commissions start with a bad picture of a bad corner.
We visit and take the real measurements
Anywhere in the South West. We check the floor level, the wall run and where the sun lands at four o'clock, because that is what decides the finish.
A drawing, a price, and one honest opinion
One design, costed to the pound, with the thing we would change if it were ours. If we think you should spend less, we say so in writing.
Timber selected with you in the yard
You pick the actual boards. We photograph the grain and mark them, so the piece you get is the piece you chose.
Built in the workshop, photographed weekly
Every Friday you get four photographs and a sentence. No portal, no login, no project management software.
Delivered, fitted and oiled in your house
Two of us, one van, dust sheets. We oil it in place so the first coat goes on in the room it will live in.
